The appearance of politeness between the United States and China at the recent meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping via videoconference was short-lived. After the US government inscribed a dozen Chinese companies on its commercial blacklist, Beijing warned on November 25th that it reserves the right to respond accordingly.

Chinese criticism of the latest US sanctions package was not long in coming. The Chinese embassy in Washington accused the Biden government of “abusing the power of the state to suppress and restrict Chinese companies by all possible means”.

The spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zhao Lijian, assured that the country will take all necessary steps to defend its companies, reserving the right to apply countermeasures.

The latest US sanctions are not unrelated to the growing tension between the two countries over Taiwan’s status. That was the tensest issue in the recent online conversation between the leaders of the two countries. In all, the Biden administration has added 27 entities to its commercial blacklist, but not all are based in China. Entities from Japan, Pakistan, and Singapore are also on the blacklist.

Washington claims that Pakistani and Chinese entities were added to the Department of Commerce’s list for having contributed to Islamabad’s ballistic missile program and other nuclear activities.

In a statement, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo maintains that the update of the list is aimed above all at protecting US technologies in the face of the development of “military advances” by the Chinese and the Russians.
