Brazil imported more than 13.1 million tons of fertilizers between January and May this year, 12% more than the same period in 2020, when imports totaled 11.7 million tons, according to CONAB (the national food supply company). In the first five months of this year, purchases were the highest for the period since the data began being recorded in 2011.
“With the advantages of excellent prices in the international and domestic market, producers took advantage of the favorable exchange ratio of some agricultural products, resorting to advance purchases to guarantee the future of their activities,” says the bulletin.
The chart below shows a comparison of fertilizer imports by Brazil in the first five months of the year since 2017. Data are from DataLiner:

The states of Mato Grosso, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and Goiás imported 8.8 million tons of fertilizers or 67%. Bahia practically doubled the volume of its fertilizer imports in the first half of 2021, “indicating greater investment by producers in their crops, a result also of favorable prices of the main commodities,” says CONAB.
