Wheat Imports Drop 45% in May

According to an analysis by the International Center for Economic Analysis and Agribusiness Market Studies (Ceema), released on Thursday (May 29), prices for high-quality wheat remained stable between May 23 and 29. In Rio Grande do Sul, wheat was traded at R$ 70.00 per 60-kg sack, while in Paraná, prices reached R$ 80.00, based on benchmark regions in both states.
On the international front, data from Brazil’s Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) shows a sharp decline in wheat imports in May. During the first 11 business days of the month, Brazil imported 359,360 tonnes of wheat — 45% less than in the same period of 2024.
Here is a historical overview of Brazilian wheat imports starting from January 2022. The data is from DataLiner:

In Rio Grande do Sul, the market remains sluggish as planting for the new crop begins. According to Ceema, most transactions are “hand-to-mouth”, with few producers selling their stocks and focusing primarily on mills in Santa Catarina and Paraná. “Most deals involve producers located near milling facilities,” the report states.
In Santa Catarina, transactions remain sporadic, with wheat from Rio Grande do Sul being the highlight. Spot prices have remained between R$75.00 and R$80.00 per sack for six consecutive weeks.
In Paraná, supply from both Rio Grande do Sul and the international market remains significant. Spot wheat reached R$1,500.00 per tonne for delivery in July and payment in August. Argentine wheat was offered at R$1,500.00 to R$1,520.00 per tonne FOB Paranaguá.
For the 2025/26 crop, buyers have shown interest in paying R$ 1,400.00 per tonne for October and R$ 1,350.00 for November, but according to TF Agronômica, no sellers were willing to accept those prices.
Planting area projections for the new crop indicate a reduction. Paraná has already forecast a 22% drop, while Brazil’s National Supply Company (Conab) estimates a national decrease of 11.7%. In Rio Grande do Sul, Emater projects an 18% reduction, which could potentially limit wheat cultivation to around 1.1 million hectares.
In this context, Conab emphasizes that reaching the national production estimate of 8.2 million tonnes will depend on favorable weather throughout the growing season.
