The utilization of rail to transport cargo to the ports of Paraná state increased 63% in January compared to December last year. In the first month of 2022, 569,559 tonnes were handled via rail, nearly 13.7% of the total volume handled in these ports in the period.

Rail moved 301,434 tons in January 2021, accounting for 8.4% of the total handled in that month. “The participation of the railway mode has only increased,” says Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.

The cost of moving products to ports or from ports to final domestic destinations in the case of imports is critical in favoring trains over other modes of transportation. However, according to Garcia, the infrastructure that the Paraná ports currently offer for either load or land freight makes the usage of trains even more appealing.

That is why we are investing in innovations like the Moegão, an exclusive hopper to be used for unloading solid bulk commodities out of wagons,” Garcia explains. In recent years, the public company has also supported private terminals to increase railcar capacity.

HIGHWAY

Although 83.8% of goods were still moved by trucks in January 2022, which is equivalent to 3,483,843 tonnes, the participation of the road modal dropped by almost 5%.

In 2021, 3,173,899 tonnes of products were transported via highway from or to Paraná, accounting for 88.2% of goods.

In addition, 2.5% of all handling (104,953 tonnes) were liquid items transported through pipelines.

Sorting Yard

Almost 26,000 trucks passed through the Sorting Yard in the first month of this year before unloading soy, bran, and corn at the Port of Paranaguá, twice the amount seen in 2021, which was 11,096.

Origins

Nearly 50% (329,058 tons) of the 655,883 tonnes of soybeans that arrived at the Port of Paranguá came from the state of Paraná. Other states that send commodities via Paranaguá were Mato Grosso do Sul (16%) and Mato Grosso (10%).

Soybean meal, transported by truck from origin to port, amounted to 225,976 tonnes. Of this volume, 55% are from Paraná (123,509 tonnes), 21% from Goiás and 18% from Mato Grosso do Sul.

Of the 177,392 tonnes of corn that arrived via road, 75% (133,151 tons) came from Paraná, 14% from Mato Grosso, and 6% from Mato Grosso do Sul.
