China will no longer require small pig farms to obtain government environmental approval before raising pigs, the Reuters agency reported, citing the country’s Ministry of Agriculture. The move comes amid Chinese efforts to rebuild its herd of pigs.

By reducing costs and bureaucracy for small farmers, China is trying to lure them back into pig production. The African swine fever virus wiped out about 50% of the country’s swine herd in 2018 and 2019 and hit small farmers particularly hard.

“For swine raising projects with an annual production of fewer than 5,000 pigs, the environmental impact registration form may be completed online, without the need for the approval of an environmental impact assessment,” the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement, according to the agency.
