Santos Brasil’s LCL Carbon Neutral Program Aims to Slash Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Santos Brasil is taking a significant step to reduce its operations’ carbon footprint, as well as those of its clients. Focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the company has launched the LCL Carbon Neutral program, which certifies that the services provided for Less than Container Load (LCL) cargo—ranging from road transport to handling and storage—are offset. This initiative helps the company lower its own emissions (Scope 1) and supports its commercial partners in reducing their Scope 3 emissions, which pertain to the value chain.
Initially, the program is exclusively available for activities conducted at the Santos and Guarujá Customs Industrial Logistics Centers (Clias), targeting LCL cargo clients served by NVOCCs (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers) and Freight Forwarders.
By joining the LCL Carbon Neutral program, clients receive monthly updates on the total emissions of their operations and the volumes handled. Santos Brasil offsets these emissions through the purchase of carbon credits. Clients receive a certificate from an independent consultancy that verifies the emission values and the neutralization method.
An internal team systematically maps the GHG emissions from all Santos Brasil operations. In collaboration with an independent consultancy, emissions and offset calculations are performed for the new service, ensuring complete accuracy and transparency.
Among the clients benefiting from emission offsets is Allink Neutral Provider, one of the largest NVOCCs, which is also intensely focused on carbon neutrality in LCL maritime cargo transport.
Wagner Toffoli, Commercial Director for Freight Forwarder & NVOCC at Santos Brasil, stated that LCL Carbon Neutral shows Santos Brasil’s commitment to sustainability, providing concrete support for our clients’ decarbonization programs. “We are excited to launch this innovative project catered to the challenges our Freight Forwarders and NVOCC clients face in their operations. It is also important to highlight the synergy and complementarity with the Green Route project our client Allink is launching. Thus, the entire LCL operation is encircled within decarbonization and sustainability efforts.”
André Gobersztejn, CEO of Allink, emphasized that the carbon-free program offered by Santos Brasil meets global market demands. “Our partnership in this initiative reflects the synergy between our two companies, which are guided by innovation, high governance standards, and a commitment to ESG principles. We aim for a better world for this and future generations,” he said.
Santos Brasil has been a signatory to the UN Global Compact since 2013 and is part of B3’s Novo Mercado, the highest standard of corporate governance, and the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE). The company’s growth strategy incorporates human and environmental considerations as integral parts and drivers for balanced value creation for society, aligned with best ESG practices.
The company is focused on reducing and neutralizing carbon emissions by 2040 in the environmental realm. This includes gradually shifting its energy use from diesel to electricity and offsetting Scope 2 GHG emissions (energy) by purchasing I-REC certificates. This year alone, eight electric RTGs (yard cranes) have been put into operation at Tecon Santos, with another eight units in the purchasing phase. Last year, Santos Brasil met three environmental targets set for 2024 ahead of schedule, achieving a 50% reduction in waste generation, a 41% reduction in water consumption, and a 36% reduction in GHG emissions.
