According to a statement from Petrobras, on Friday (8/23), the existence of cracks was found in the hull of the Rio de Janeiro Platform, in the Campos Basin, after an inspection of the vessel’s external tanks. As a result, approximately 1.2 cubic meters of residual oil leaked.

Owned by Modec, FPSO Cidade de Rio de Janeiro has been out of operation since last year and is in the process of leaving the Espadarte field lease, 130 kilometers from the coast. The withdrawal of the 107 people who were embarked started on Saturday and was completed on Monday (8/26).

During a new overflight on Tuesday (08/27), however, the presence of more oil in the sea was discovered, with an estimated volume of 6.6 cubic meters, in addition to the identified and already collected leakage of 1.2 cubic meters.

Seven gathering and dispersal vessels are already operating at the site, plus four support vessels and one helicopter for overflying. Modec also reported that the increase in crack length has been noted since the initial occurrence of the crack, but the ship remains in stable position and in safe conditions under permanent monitoring by Modec and Petrobras.
