Brazilian pesticide imports via the container terminal at the port of Paranaguá, the second largest in the country, have grown by 95% this year, according to figures released by the company that manages the terminal, TCP.

More than 166 thousand tonnes passed through the terminal between January and August this year, which was encouraged by the increase in the stocks of companies, the incidence of pests in the country, and the approval for the use of new molecules by the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to data from Sindiveg, a union representing the plant defense industry, the pesticide market in Paraná was responsible for 10% of Brazil’s purchases in the first half of 2022. The state invested more than US$ 630 million in inputs in the period, 12% higher than the previous year’s period.

“Despite Parana having increased by 12% the purchased amount of such products, we found that throughput increased by 95%. The reason behind that is many companies in various states opt for Paranagua,” commented in a note, Giovanni Guidolim, commercial manager at TCP.

The leading importers of pesticides brought in 11,382 TEUs in 2022, almost double the number recorded in 2021 when 5,851 TEUs were imported. “In 2022, anticipating a possible lack of products, our customers intensified imports for use in the next crops, resulting in large stocks of the goods,” explained the executive.
