Partners leave Yara’s ‘green’ ammonia project in Norway

Yara, one of the world’s largest producers of fertilizers, announced on March 29 that Aker Clean Hydrogen and state-owned renewable energy generation company Statkraft left the “green” ammonia production project” that the three developed in Norway. They had been partners in this venture until now.

“A team made up of members from all the partners involved worked last year to mature the initial phase. The study demonstrates that the project is viable, but due to strategic considerations, the parties decided not to maintain their current participation [in the project]”, said Yara in a note.

Ammonia, used to make nutrients like urea and ammonium nitrate, has traditionally been generated using an energy-intensive process that produces enormous amounts of greenhouse gases. The “green” ammonia technique allows hydrogen in water to be used as an input while using clean energy.

Yara informed that it will continue alone in the project and that Aker and Statkraft remain willing to collaborate with the transformations in the production chain “in the future.” The initiative provides for the total “decarbonization” of the Yara plant located on the Heroya Peninsula in Porsgrunn, a municipality south of the Norwegian territory.

The company recently informed that its goal is to supply the market with the first products made from green ammonia by mid-2023. Yara expects to obtain enough hydrogen to produce 20,500 tonnes of green ammonia per year, a volume that can be transformed into 60 thousand to 80 thousand tonnes of green fertilizer.
