Ocean Network Express (ONE) announced that it has advanced its Green Strategy through the implementation of a Ship Recycling Policy and its joining of the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI), reinforcing its commitment to responsible practices and environmental management.
Both measures align with ONE’s efforts to enhance transparency, promote ethical operations, and maintain high environmental standards throughout the entire lifecycle of its vessels.
As ONE continues to expand its fleet, the shipping company stated it is strengthening its commitment to the safe and environmentally responsible dismantling of vessels at the end of their operational lives.
In line with this commitment, ONE established a ship recycling policy that mandates all vessels be dismantled only at certified and reputable recycling facilities that comply with applicable international standards and regulations.
By joining the SRTI, the company stated that it would disclose its ship recycling policies and practices, supporting the initiative’s efforts to enhance accountability and sustainability in the maritime industry and encourage voluntary data sharing among shipowners.
Michimasa Noda, Senior Vice President of Sustainability at ONE, said: “The development of our Ship Recycling Policy, along with our participation in the SRTI, marks a significant advancement in our ‘Clean Ship Recycling’ initiative, one of the seven pillars of ONE’s Green Strategy.”
“We remain committed to fulfilling our responsibilities as shipowners and promoting safe, environmentally sound, and socially responsible ship recycling practices throughout the maritime industry,” he added.
The announcement coincides with the upcoming entry into force of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC), scheduled to take effect on June 26, 2025.
The HKC stipulates that ship recycling must be carried out in a manner that does not pose unnecessary risks to human health, safety, and the environment.
