New DataLiner Data: Brazil’s Foreign Trade in 2025 – Exports Stagnate While Imports Rise Amid Currency and Industrial Impacts

Newly released data from Datamar’s Business Intelligence team on Brazil’s containerized trade reveals that from January to May 2025, Brazilian exports fell by 0.4% compared to the same period in 2024. However, when comparing May 2025 to May 2024 alone, shipments showed a modest recovery, rising by 1.2%.

Below is a comparison of Brazilian container exports from January to May 2022 through 2025. The chart was created using DataLiner data:

Among Brazil’s top exported goods during this period, meat remained in the lead, with a volume 3.3% higher than from January to May 2024. Wood products, on the other hand, experienced a 6.3% decline, while cotton shipments increased by 2.2%.

As for destinations, China remained Brazil’s leading trading partner despite a sharp 17.3% drop in container volume compared to the same period in 2024. The United States came in second, showing a 3% increase in volume imported from Brazil.

In contrast, Brazilian containerized imports showed stronger performance. There was a 10.5% increase in total volume unloaded in the country between January and May 2025, compared to the same period last year. In May alone, the increase was 8.6%.

The top imported goods so far this year were reactors, boilers, and machinery, with a 44.1% increase over the same period in 2024. These were followed by plastics (+4.4%) and electrical equipment (+24.8%).

In terms of origin, China led with a 14.1% increase, followed by the United States (-0.6%) and Germany (-1.6%).

Regional Overview – Argentina and Uruguay

In Argentina, container exports grew by 3% between January and May 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. The country also recorded a sharp increase in container imports, with a 60.3% rise year-to-date.

Uruguay, meanwhile, exported 6.1% more than in the same period of 2024, while its imports rose by 7.9% in the first five months of 2025.
