Itajaí and Navegantes dredging ends in disappointment

Week 201921

The expansion works of the port channel shared by Itajaí and Navegantes have been completed without meeting the specifications originally outlined by the port authority, according to Portos e Navios. As a result, the Port of Navegantes alone has had to redirect 20 vessels so far this year, incurring a loss of about R$24m to the local economy.

The port authority expected to receive vessels with a length of 336m from 2016 onwards when the expansion works were due to be completed; however, the project was completed this year and did not meet the original specifications. The dredging contract outlined a specific volume of sediment to be removed from the river channel and this was removed, however with the accumulation of silt over the years due to the delay in dredging, the channel did not meet the dimensions specified. In spite of this the company contracted to conduct the works considered the job completed.

The state government did not find irregularities with the work carried out or the contract. The project required R$125m in investments.
