A monthly survey carried out by ABICS (the Brazilian soluble coffee industry association) pointed out that in March 2021, national exports of the product totaled 369,640 60-kg bags; this represents an increase of 9.2% in comparison with the same month of 2020 and a 21.9% increase compared to February this year. First-quarter shipments abroad of instant coffee reached 946,267 bags.

According to the entity’s Institutional Relations Director, Aguinaldo Lima, the March result was good and offset the slower pace seen in January and February. “With the resumption of sales activity observed last month, we can say that instant coffee exports from Brazil show annual stability, but with an upward bias, which makes us believe that it is possible to reach ABIC’s goal of 3% growth in 2021”.

Destinations

In the first quarter of 2021, Brazil traded instant coffee with 94 countries. The main customers were the United States (163,519 bags). After the United States came Russia (96,174 bags); Argentina, (75,599 bags); Japan (74,354 bags); and Indonesia (64,621 bags).

According to the director of ABICS, among the main countries purchasing instant coffee, Turkey and Colombia are worth mentioning. The Turks increased their acquisitions by 132.4% compared to 2020 and occupy the eighth position in the ranking. Colombians are in the 12th position and increased their imports by 115.9%.

Lima also highlights the presence of the Netherlands among the 15 main destinations of the Brazilian product. “The Dutch are among the world’s major instant coffee producers, and they have risen in the ranking of our customers since last year. This demonstrates an acceptance of the quality and diversity of our breweries”, he concludes.
