FT: Amazon, Ikea and Unilever commit to maritime carbon neutrality by 2040

A group of international companies formed by Amazon, Ikea, and Unilever, and others have committed to transporting their cargoes in carbon-neutral ships by 2040, the biggest step so far to reduce emissions in world maritime shipping.
The pledge of nine multinationals should give shipping firms and others involved more confidence to invest in the ships, infrastructure, and fuels needed to eliminate the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Reducing carbon emissions from shipping will require investing billions of dollars in fleet refurbishment and the production of new fuels – such as green ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen – on a large scale.
Amazon said the target will apply to all cargo it carries. This includes cargo from third-party suppliers based in China, who turn to the US company to handle their logistics and represent the majority of Amazon sellers.
The group of companies, which also includes Inditex, which owns Zara, Michelin, Patagonia, Brooks Running, Frog Bikes, and Tchibo, said that the fuels to be used to reach the 2040 goal must raise production to sufficient levels and must have zero greenhouse gas emissions throughout the lifecycle, including production, not just during use.
