A member of the Filipino crew of a cargo ship self-isolating in the Port of Recife died due to Covid-19 on Sunday night (July 18th). Eight other crew were also diagnosed with the disease. Two of them contracted the delta variant of the infection and were hospitalized.

According to the state department of health (SES), the Filipino man was 50 years old and was hospitalized in a private hospital in the capital of Pernambuco since July 1st.

On Wednesday (14), the state government had confirmed the first two cases of the delta variant of the virus in Pernambuco soil. The man who died, however, had not tested positive for the variant, according to the secretariat.

“He could not do the genetic sequencing, which is what determines which variant he had. But from his contacts and being part of the crew, the delta variant is very suspect. He was being treated in this way with all the necessary care, including in relation to his body”, stated the state secretary of Health André Longo.
