Ferroport, the iron ore terminal operator at Porto do Açu in São João da Barra, northern Rio de Janeiro, has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and progress in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, contributing to sustainable business practices and local development. A joint venture between mining company Anglo American and Prumo Logística, Ferroport expanded its reforestation efforts in the region, planting over 2.5 million seedlings
.
The company also converted 100% of its flex-fuel vehicle fleet to ethanol and, for the third consecutive year, received the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program for its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions inventory as part of its decarbonization plan. In 2023, Ferroport marked a decade of operations with record ore shipments—25 million tons on 148 vessels—and was ranked Top 2 in the Antaq Award 2024 in the category of highest Environmental Performance Index (IDA) among private use terminals (TUPs) in Brazil, scoring the best result among iron ore terminals.
In 2024, Ferroport established a new partnership with Caruara Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), the largest restinga (coastal woodland) fragment in a private conservation unit in Brazil, for the reforestation of 115 hectares—equivalent to 140 football fields—boosting local biodiversity. The company also reports that 100% of its electricity comes from renewable wind sources, and over 93% of the water used in operations is reused.
Now in its fourth Sustainability Report, prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, Ferroport—employing more than 600 people directly and indirectly in São João da Barra and its surrounding areas—also highlighted R$8 million invested in social initiatives, including education, sports, and cultural projects. For the third time, the company was recognized as a Great Place to Work (GPTW), earning its highest-ever score of 90, with 92% employee participation in the workplace climate survey.
