The European Commission has proposed countermeasures targeting up to €95 billion (US$107.2 billion) worth of American imports, in response to a series of import tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The retaliatory measures would be implemented if ongoing negotiations with Washington fail to achieve a rollback of the existing tariffs.

The proposal comes as a reaction to U.S. import duties on automobiles and a broader range of so-called “reciprocal” tariffs. The European Union’s countermeasures would cover various American goods, including wine, fish, aircraft, automobiles and auto parts, chemicals, electrical equipment, healthcare products, and machinery.

The European Commission, which manages trade policy for the bloc’s 27 member states, has opened a one-month consultation period, allowing EU governments and businesses to provide feedback. After the consultation phase, a final decision on the retaliatory tariffs will be made. However, the actual scope of the countermeasures may target a smaller volume of U.S. imports.

The potential EU tariffs’ announcement coincides with President Trump’s expected unveiling of a U.S.-UK trade agreement, adding further complexity to the evolving global trade landscape.
