DNIT performs initial displacement to remove a wrecked ship in Pará

The DNIT (national department of transport infrastructure) is carrying out yet another step in the process of removing the MV Haidar vessel – wrecked in 2015 – from the bottom of the Pará River: the initial removal of the structure took place approximately 10 meters from the pier. The measure is necessary to gradually re-float, verticalize and remove the vessel from berth 302, restoring the conditions of use of this berth at the port of Vila do Conde, in Barcarena (PA).

Due to the size and conditions of the structure, the process of removing the MV Haidar from the stretch is carried out in previously defined stages. The initial removal of the vessel is in progress after the detachment from the river bottom, carried out in the last week. And after the current phase, the ship will be verticalized and the final displacement will be carried out to definitively position the structure.

When it sank on October 6, 2015, the Lebanese-flagged MV Haidar was carrying 5,000 live cattle and 700 tons of oil. By removing the shipwreck from berth 302 at the port of Vila do Conde, it will be possible to increase the number of vessels that use the site.

The work of the Autarchy teams to release the structure began in February this year. The DNIT acted in conjunction with the Brazilian Navy (Capitania of Ports), the Pará Environment Secretariat (Semas), and the Companhia Docas do Pará (CDP), in order to obtain authorization for the work to be carried out in accordance with environmental, port and work safety legislation.

The environmental control plan for the vessel’s buoyancy and the operation’s environmental safety was approved by Semas at the end of 2020, and authorization was granted by the Navy in February of this year.
