Chancay–Shanghai Sea Route Boosts Latin America–China Trade
May, 21, 2025 Posted by Denise VileraWeek 202521
According to Shanghai customs authorities, since its launch in December 2024, the Chancay–Shanghai maritime route has driven a surge in cargo volume and trade value between Shanghai and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries.
A flagship Belt and Road Initiative project between China and the LAC region, the route completed 48 vessel trips in the first four months of 2025, handling 41,000 tons of goods valued at 1.02 billion yuan (US$143 million).
Thanks to this new connection, Shanghai–Peru trade rose by over 60% year over year in January–April. Overall, Shanghai’s trade with LAC countries totaled 90.81 billion yuan (US$12.7 billion) in the first four months of 2025, marking a 2% increase compared to last year.
Rising Imports of Agricultural Products
The route has enabled greater volumes of niche agricultural products to reach the Chinese market. Examples include:
- Colombian coffee beans: Shanghai Jisheng Trading Co. imported nearly 500,000 yuan (US$70,000) in the first four months of 2025, and expects to double the previous year’s total imports of 3 million yuan (US$420,000).
- Frozen white shrimp from Ecuador: A major aquaculture export, this product has seen growing demand. From January 1 to May 13, Qingpu (Shanghai) customs authorities cleared 1,062 tons, an 80% year-on-year increase. Notably, same-day import processing and 24-hour clearance are now possible at the port of Shanghai.
Growing Exports from Shanghai to Latin America
Exports are also accelerating. From January to April, the Luojing terminal handled 89,000 tons of outbound cargo bound for the region, up more than 30% year over year.
In a recent shipment, 35 Chinese-made dump trucks departed from Luojing for the Dominican Republic, contributing to bilateral cooperation on infrastructure projects.
