Almost 70% of all Brazilian steel and aluminum exports were sent to the United States between January and March 2025. This is the volume of the country’s sales that may be taxed at 25%, the specific tariff adopted by the U.S. in March for these products.
G1 considers the quantity of products shipped to the United States in the first months of the year, measured in tons.
The data comes from the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Trade (MDIC) and was released on Monday (7th).
During this period, approximately 2 million tons of steel, aluminum, and other products were exported to the U.S. In total, Brazilian exports amounted to 2.9 million tons, meaning nearly 70% were destined for the U.S.
The revenue from sales to the U.S. totaled USD 1.5 billion out of a global amount of USD 3.2 billion in products exported to all of Brazil’s trade partners.
In a statement, the MDIC warned that the selection of products for the report is approximate. The ministry used the list released by the United States on the 5th.
Brazil is the second-largest supplier of steel to the U.S. by volume. According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the country imported 4.1 million tons from Brazil in 2024.
These numbers are second only to Canada, which supplied 6 million tons to the U.S. market. Mexico comes in third, sending 3.2 million tons.
Specific Tariff
According to the MDIC report, these products are subject to the 25% tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
On the 2nd, the Republicans announced tariffs on products imported from trade partners. Brazil will face a 10% tariff. However, products like automobiles, steel, and aluminum will be subject to a higher rate of 25%.
The automotive trade with the U.S. is smaller than that of the steel industry. Brazil exported 18,900 tons of vehicles and parts between January and March, compared to 401,900 tons exported to all trade partners.
