According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), pig slaughtering increased by 5.2% to 11.27m head between January and March, compared to the same period last year. Last quarter’s result is the outcome of China’s hunger for pork as the country faces an ongoing battle with African swine flu.

989,100 tons of pig carcasses were produced in the first quarter, up 3.6% year-on-year and up 0.9% compared to the fourth quarter of 2018. Slaughtering also rose by 0.7% when compared with the Q4 2018.

IBGE data shows that cattle slaughtering reached 7.771m head in the first quarter of 2019, up 0.3% year-on-year and down 4.6% compared to the fourth quarter of last year. A total of 1.91m tons of cattle carcasses were produced in the first trimester, up 1.4% year-on-year.
