Brazil’s Minister of Infrastructure, Marcelo Sampaio, said that he “informally” sent last Tuesday, August 30, to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) all the studies and projects for the privatization of the Port of Santos, which Sampaio hopes to auction off later this year, despite the tight schedule.
According to him, the expectation is that all formal rites required before TCU is clear to announce that receipt of the privatization project will end by September 16.
The studies will first pass by the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), the Federal Government’s Investment Partnership Program (PPI), and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).
Sampaio also explained that the Ministry is currently evaluating the best approach to proceed with the lease of the STS10 area, which shall soon house a mega container terminal. There is an intense dispute over the region’s auction around the possibility of shipowners being allowed to participate.
According to the minister, if the privatization of Santos takes off this year, the government may let the new port operator define the “best use of the area.”
In related news, the signing of the concession contract for Brazil’s first port privatization, Companhia Docas do Espírito Santo (Codesa), is scheduled for the 5th.
