Foreign sales of tobacco increased by 25.5% in volume in the first four months of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Economy. This is an increase of 32,400 tons of shipments.

The main cause of this increase is stalled shipments last year due to the lack of availability of containers and slots. In terms of export revenues, growth was 15.7% as the average price per ton was lower, an increase of around US$88.8m.

With this growth, tobacco was the tenth product most exported by Brazil in the category of basic products.

The first four months of 2019 also registered a growth in exports of cigarettes manufactured in Brazil, which generated US$4.6m in export revenues, a 2.59% increase on the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Economy. Although the volume shipped was lower than in 2018, prices were higher than last year.
