The Brazilian government and China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) signed an agreement on Tuesday (May 13) to expand Brazilian ethanol exports to the Asian country.
The memorandum of understanding establishes a bilateral working group between Brazil and the NEA. China is currently implementing E10 gasoline, a fuel blend that contains 10% ethanol.
According to Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, the working group will focus on the development and technological innovation of both first- and second-generation ethanol. The goal is to support ethanol use as a complement to gasoline in conventional internal combustion engines, hybrids, and dedicated ethanol engines.
The partnership also aims to promote:
- Regulatory alignment between the two countries,
- Bilateral investments and joint ventures,
- Technical and institutional training.
In addition, the scope of the collaboration will include advanced fuels and applications, such as:
- The production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF),
- Its use as a marine fuel (bunker fuel) substitute,
- And ethanol’s potential role as a feedstock for bioplastics.
During his visit to China, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, also signed a second agreement with the NEA focused on technology development and investment in areas such as electricity transmission systems, nuclear energy, renewables, off-grid systems, and energy data sharing, all with an emphasis on energy transition.
