The volume of road freight in Brazil increased 67.5% in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period last year, mainly driven by agribusiness, said the online cargo platform CarregaBras in a report released on Thursday.

The survey is based on the analysis of 3.44 million freights carried out in the first six months of the year, according to CarregaBras. The data showed that agribusiness was responsible for 37% of all cargoes registered on the platform in the period.

“As the vaccination gained strength, the economy began to respond,” said the operations director at CarregaBras, Bruno Hacad.

“In the first semester, CarregaBras distributed around 28 billion reais in freight and considering only the second quarter, freight volume increased 83% compared to the same period of 2020”, he detailed.

Considering only Brazilian agribusiness, the first half registered a turnover of 10.8 billion reais, driven by the performances of the ports of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and São Paulo, with each holding a 14% – 15% share participation.

CarregaBras highlighted that when comparing the first half of this year with the same period in 2020, agribusiness freights increased by 65%. Fertilizers were the most transported products, with a 29% share, followed by soybeans (13%) and corn (10%).

Following the segment division, industrialized products were responsible for 27% of freights announced by CarregaBras in the first half of 2021. The shipments of construction inputs were responsible for a 12% share in the company’s operations.
