The Port of Rio de Janeiro oversaw, for the first time, the berthing of CMA CGM Bahia, the largest dual-fuel container ship in operation in South America. A representative of the latest generation of sustainable vessels, this remarkable container ship, measuring 336 meters in length, with a maximum capacity of 13,200 TEUs, and powered by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), was built in 2023 and is considered a milestone in the naval industry.

CMA CGM Bahia docked at Rio Brasil Terminal and set sail on Saturday, the 20th, after handling some 1,033 containers.

The modern vessel, owned by French shipping company CMA CGM, utilizes a dual-fuel LNG power system and features an LNG cargo tank with a Mark III cargo containment system of 14,000 cubic meters. According to the shipbuilder, Hudong-Zhonghua, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system can reduce methane slip in gas mode by 50% and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by more than 28%.

The CMA CGM Bahia not only prioritizes energy efficiency but also incorporates advanced technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. An imposing wind deflector on the bow provides significant fuel savings during voyages while energy-saving devices at the stern enhance propeller efficiency.

The arrival of the CMA CGM Bahia at the Port of Rio de Janeiro represents a stroke of progress in the pursuit of transitioning to green fuels and promoting more environmentally friendly navigation, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to a cleaner and more efficient maritime future.
