The Brazilian trade balance kicked off the year with a surplus of $2.22 billion in the first week of January, covering a four-business-day period. According to data released on Monday (8) by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC), this result stems from $6.15 billion in exports and $3.93 billion in imports during the period.
Daily average exports surged by 48.5% in the first week of the month compared to January of the previous year, reaching $1.538 billion. This increase was driven by the extractive industry (+85.1%), followed by agriculture (+54.3%), and manufacturing (+33%).
On the other hand, imports rose by 5.6% in the same year-over-year comparison, totaling $984.17 million. The increase was supported by a 9.8% rise in purchases from the manufacturing sector and a 0.7% increase in those from agriculture. However, imports from the extractive industry declined by 35.1%.
