The Japanese government has officially called off the suspension on imports of live birds and hatching eggs from Mato Grosso do Sul, according to the latest update on Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries’ platform for embargoes and sanitary authorizations. This temporary suspension, initiated on September 19, followed the identification of a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (IAPP, H5N1 virus) in a backyard chicken in the state.

At the time of the suspension, the Japanese ministry stated that the measure aimed to “prevent the transmission of the virus to domestically raised live birds and for reasons of food hygiene.” The embargo’s lifting was announced after Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture submitted more information to Japan, confirming that the outbreak in Bonito has been resolved.
