The Brazilian government is celebrating six newly opened markets for the country’s agribusiness, including two in Colombia and four in Japan. The announcement was made by Roberto Perosa, the Secretary of Commerce and International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, during a press meeting on November 28.

In the case of Colombia, new markets for fish meal and oil for animal feed from Brazil have been established. The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) sent the phytosanitary certification to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) on the 27th.

Colombia stands as the third-largest market for animal-origin meals exported by Brazil. According to the Colombian National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), it is estimated that 67% of Colombian households have at least one pet in 2023.

Brazil holds the position of the primary exporter of fish meal and oil to Colombia, holding 60% of the “pet food” market in the country. Spending on pet food, toys, and accessories in Colombia is projected to reach US$5 billion this year.

Regarding Japan, the new openings concern canned beef and pork and extracts of beef and pork. The Japanese market had been off-limits for eight years, and with these recent developments, there is an expectation of a gradual and complete resumption of exports in 2024.

These achievements result from the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).

Since the beginning of 2023, Brazilian agribusiness products, featuring a diverse export agenda, have successfully accessed 71 markets across the Americas, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Europe.

Brazilian International Trade

Brazil’s performance in international trade has been noteworthy. Between January and October of this year, Brazilian agribusiness exports reached a record figure of US$139.58 billion, marking a 3.0% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

The sectors contributing significantly to the growth in Brazilian agribusiness exports include the soy complex (+US$4.37 billion), sugar and alcohol complex (+US$3.03 billion), and cereals, flours, and preparations (+US$1.82 billion).

Asia emerged as the primary destination for Brazilian agribusiness between January and October 2023, accounting for US$74.60 billion in exports, followed by the European Union with a total of US$18.43 billion.

China remains a prominent destination for Brazilian agro-products, with exports reaching US$51.10 billion.
