Suzano has initiated tests with an autonomous truck for pulp operations at the Itaqui Port in São Luís. These tests co-occur at Portocel (a joint venture between Suzano and Cenibra) in Aracruz (ES).

The trucks are entirely controlled by artificial intelligence and use cameras and sensors integrated into various robotic systems. The system employs a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) approach, resulting in acceleration, braking, and steering commands. According to Suzano, this approach optimizes fuel consumption, reduces operational costs by approximately 17%, and minimizes environmental impact.

The autonomous configuration of the vehicles enhances operational efficiency and safety and provides advantages over conventional operations. With a standard reaction time of one-tenth of a second, the independent system surpasses human capacity, which is crucial for handling simultaneous events in emergencies.

The project considers the use of adapted tractor-trailers for the internal transportation of cellulose, the main cargo handled by the company.

The technology in the vehicles, developed by Lume Robotics, encompasses computer vision, mapping, localization, route planning, decision-making, control, and operations center. The tests cover internal movements, from transporting cellulose to subprocesses such as ship loading, unloading of barges, and activities in yards, warehouses, and docks.

“We expect that this solution will not only provide more safety and operational efficiency but also strengthen the culture of innovation at the Itaqui Port, resulting in significant gains for the business and management, as well as reinforcing environmental sustainability through an operation with lower fuel consumption,” concludes Arnaldo Miranda, Ports Manager at Suzano.
