Brazilian pork shipments (considering all products, both fresh and processed) have already seen a 9.6% increase in 2023, according to data from the Brazilian Animal Protein Association(ABPA). In total, 1.013 million tons were shipped between January and October this year, compared to the 924.2 thousand tons recorded in the same period last year.

In terms of revenue, the accumulated increase reaches 13.1%, with $2.361 billion in the first ten months of 2023, compared to $2.088 billion in the same comparative period of the previous year.

When looking at only the month of October, pork exports reached 93 thousand tons, a 5.7% decrease compared to the total shipped in the same period last year, which was 98.6 thousand tons. China continues to be the leading destination for the sector’s exports, with 336.5 thousand tons shipped between January and October, which is 8% lower than the total for the first ten months of 2022. Following China are Hong Kong, with 101.3 thousand tons (+23%), the Philippines, also with 101.3 thousand tons (+40%), Chile, with 69.1 thousand tons (+47%), Singapore, with 53.4 thousand tons (+12%), and Vietnam, with 41.9 thousand tons.

“With this year-to-date figures, which have already exceeded one million tons in just the first ten months of the year, sector projections maintain an outlook for shipments of around 1.2 million tons in 2023. The increased diversification of markets beyond China, with the opening of exports to other high-demand destinations, such as Mexico, supports positive prospects for this year and the next,” said ABPA President, Ricardo Santin.

Santa Catarina, the main pork-exporting state in Brazil, shipped 542.7 thousand tons between January and October, a figure 8.9% higher than that recorded in the same period in 2022. Following Santa Catarina are Rio Grande do Sul, with 235.7 thousand tons (+9.6%), Paraná, with 141.7 thousand tons (+5.2%), Mato Grosso, with 24.8 thousand tons (+39.2%), and Mato Grosso do Sul, with 21.5 thousand tons (+29.8%).

“In addition to the opening of five new large markets in 2023, countries like Chile and the Philippines have been demanding more Brazilian protein. Added to this is the increase in exports to Japan and South Korea, solidifying Brazil as an important supplier in these markets, which are perhaps the most value-added markets at present,” emphasized Luís Rua, ABPA’s Director of Markets.
