Sugar-alcohol Sector Make Up 1/3 of São Paulo’s Agribusiness Exports

The sugar-alcohol sector accounted for 35.3% of agribusiness exports in the state of São Paulo from January to September this year, totaling $7.23 billion. This represents a 24.7% increase in value and a 5.4% increase in export volumes.

The sector received a boost from a 22.5% increase in the average price of sugar, coupled with a 16.1% rise in ethanol shipments, resulting in a 5.7% increase in export values.

Within the sugarcane and alcohol complex, sugar exports made up 86.9%, while ethanol constituted 13.1%.

Key Markets for the Sugar-Alcohol Sector

China was the leading buyer (11.3%) of sugarcane and alcohol sector products during this period, followed by Nigeria (7.0%), Morocco (6.1%), India (5.6%), and Saudi Arabia (5.5%).

In addition to these, the European Union (5.1%), Bangladesh (5.0%), South Korea (4.7%), Algeria (4.4%), and the United States (4.3%) were also buyers.

These figures for the period were provided by the São Paulo Agribusiness Technology Agency, based on research by the Agricultural Economics Institute (IEA-APTA), affiliated with the State Department of Agriculture and Supply.

The soy complex was not far behind, with a positive performance of 10.4% in shipments and a 2.2% decrease in values.

As a result, agribusiness in the state of São Paulo recorded a surplus of $16.62 billion between January and September, a 7.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
