Port of Santos achieves record growth, surpasses 111M tonnes of cargo in the year

The overall cargo throughput at the Port of Santos from January to August 2023 reached 111.4 million tonnes, a 1.2% increase compared to the same period in 2022, confirming expectations of record growth. In August alone, the port handled 15.16 million tonnes, marking a 3.6% increase over August 2022, setting a record for the month and ranking as the 4th best monthly performance in history. The best monthly figure also occurred this year in June (15.6 million).

Year-to-date, exports totaled 83.42 million tonnes, a 3.8% increase over the same period last year. Conversely, imports amounted to 28.01 million tonnes, a 5.9% decrease from 2022.

In August, exports saw a 9.9% increase, reaching 11.69 million tonnes (compared to 10.63 million in August 2022). This increase can be attributed to the increased movement of solid bulk cargo, which rose by 9.2% compared to the previous year and August 2022. Corn was the most significant cargo, totaling 3.26 million tonnes handled, representing a 42.1% increase. Overall, grain cargo reached 8.1 million tonnes, marking the best result in history.

The container movement at the Port of Santos in August was influenced by the growth in cargo volume, with a positive result of 1.2% compared to the same month the previous year, totaling 4.8 million tonnes. In terms of TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), there was a 1.7% decrease (448,817 in 2023 compared to 456,478 in 2022). Year-to-date, there was a 5.8% decrease, with 3.10 million TEUs in 2023 compared to 3.29 million in the first eight months of 2022.

The number of ship dockings in the year increased by 3.6%, with 3,584 in 2023 compared to 3,461 in 2022. Santos’ cumulative share in Brazil’s commercial trade was 28.3% in August.
