Port of Rio de Janeiro celebrates milestone with Gamboa Pier modernization

The first section of the expansion and modernization works at Gamboa Pier in the Port of Rio de Janeiro has been completed. The section was inaugurated with the docking of the BBC Plata ship on the evening of last Friday (15). On Saturday (16), the loading of steel products (tubes) for export began, with a scheduled seven-day operation before heading to the Middle East.

According to the port, the BBC Plata ship, with a length of 138 meters, arrived at the Port of Rio de Janeiro with a draught of 6.5 meters and will leave with a draught of 8.1 meters after loading.

Gamboa Pier, inaugurated in 1910, is one of the oldest areas in the Port of Rio de Janeiro. The structural works, with an investment of R$120 million, began last year to deepen the berths and enable the operation of larger vessels.

According to information from the PortosRio Engineering department, the project covers a total length of 600 meters of the pier, of which 200 meters have now been released, while 290 have already been completed. The completion of all works is scheduled for the first half of 2024.

Following the modernization of Gamboa Pier, the Port Authority plans to dredge the area, opening up opportunities for new businesses. The increased operational draught in this area will enable better utilization of the infrastructure and the attraction of new cargoes and shipping lines.

Leandro Lima, Superintendent of Port Management in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, highlights that these works represent a significant advancement for the Port of Rio de Janeiro. He anticipates improved performance in the use of the back area, internal transportation logistics, and operational safety, with the expectation of attracting a greater volume of cargo: “This section of Gamboa Pier has great potential to handle various types of general and bulk cargo, such as wheat, pig iron, zinc concentrate, and support cargo for offshore activities, among others. With the modernization of the pier and the deepening of water access, cargo mix diversification and profitability can potentially double demand.”
