A 36-year-old man was arrested after stealing equipment from an abandoned ship and attempting to flee from the Maritime Environmental Military Police at high speed on a boat near the Port of Santos on the coast of São Paulo. The criminal was accompanied by two accomplices who managed to escape.

According to a statement from the police department, a team from the 5th Maritime Environmental Military Police Company was patrolling the area on Tuesday (23) afternoon when they found a speedboat with two crew people docked next to an abandoned and moored ship. A third suspect was stealing bags from the ship and using a rope to lower the items to the boat with his accomplices.

The police department stated that the patrol was conducted as part of Operation Shield, established along the São Paulo coast after the death of Rota (Sao Paulo state special operations police force) officer Patrick Bastos Reis in Guarujá (SP) on July 27. The police department mentioned that the stolen ship is named ‘Skrakane,’ which has been at the Port of Santos in April 2021. The vessel has been abandoned since then.

Speedboat escape

According to the police, the two suspects who were not arrested – the man stealing the cargo from the ship and the passenger of the boat – escaped by jumping into the water as the agents approached them. The pair swam to the pier and continued on foot, according to the police.

On the other hand, the boat’s operator fled with the ship at high speed but was quickly caught by the Environmental Patrol Boat. The suspect also jumped into the water to evade the agents but was captured. He was taken to the Police Station in Guarujá (SP).

The police department further stated that a second team from the specialized nautical policing unit intercepted the criminals’ boat, which continued unmanned and adrift on the sea. The vessel was brought to a stop without causing damage.

Finally, the police reported that they had stolen piping parts, copper wires, a breathing apparatus with a compressed air cylinder mask, a full-face breathing system, three wetsuits for diving, two bilge pumps, and three industrial connectors from the boat.
