Wilson Sons has entered into a contract in May to ensure that Tecon Rio Grande receives 100% of its energy from renewable sources. To achieve this, the company obtained the IREC certification (International Renewable Energy Certificate) for the 2024/25/26 period, which will be used to record indirect energy consumption emissions in the greenhouse gas (GHG) Protocol Program, a prominent worldwide approach for quantifying GHG emissions.

The certificate guarantees the traceability of the renewable energy sources reaching the terminal and ensures zero carbon emissions from energy consumption during the mentioned years, as stated by Wilson Sons.

Through this new energy system, Wilson Sons explains that all the energy required for the operation of Tecon Rio Grande until next year will be sourced from renewable sources, which could include wind, solar, or small hydro plants. The company has recently completed the construction of a photovoltaic solar power plant, which has been installed in the main parking lot of the terminal. It consists of 74 photovoltaic modules with a capacity of 545 Wp each and is equipped with chargers for electric vehicles.

Wilson Sons’ Sustainability Director Monica Jaén described the company’s Environmental Agenda for 2023, with energy efficiency as a top commitment.

Jaén said: “This issue is directly linked to our business strategy and to the nature of our operations. Energy efficiency is highly strategic for us. We want to make the best use of all energy sources in our operations and grow in the scenario of a low-carbon economy.”
