After experiencing a 7.3% increase in cargo handling during the first quarter of this year, Tecon Rio Grande has once again seen growth in its operations. Between January and April, the terminal in Rio Grande achieved an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2022, reaching 198,857 TEUs.

Despite the positive trend, Tecon Rio Grande’s CEO, Paulo Bertinetti, remains cautious in his celebrations, considering the low volume of the previous year as the basis of comparison. He emphasizes that the percentages are interesting but should be seen as a recovery rather than a success.

Bertinetti recalls the challenges faced by the terminal in 2022, including logistics issues with shipowners, high freight costs, and container shortages caused by congestion in Asian ports. Tecon Rio Grande handled 544,300 TEUs last year, representing an 18.3% decrease compared to 2021.

Bertinetti notes that the market is returning to a certain level of normality, and he is optimistic about the second half of 2023, expecting a significant reduction in ship stopover cancellations, up to 80%.

In terms of cargo flows, 74% of operations registered at the terminal are exports, while 26% are imports. Parts, chemicals, resins, and plastics are examples of goods entering the state through the terminal, while things leaving the state include resins, frozen chicken, timber, pork meat, and furniture bound for nations such as the United States, China, Peru, and Saudi Arabia.

Regarding the Santa Clara terminal, located in Triunfo and connected to the port of Rio Grande via the Rio Grande waterway, Bertinetti reports a much higher growth rate in handling during January to April 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, with an increase of approximately 40% and a total of 4,684 TEUs. He attributes this growth partly to the increased availability of containers.
