China has cleared imports of beef stocks produced in Brazil before February 21, when shipments were suspended due to the identification of an atypical case of mad cow disease. Roberto Perosa, the Secretary of Commerce and International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture, confirmed the information on Thursday, April 27.

According to the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), meat products produced on February 21, 22, and 23 and shipped after February 23 cannot be exported. Perosa stated that the beef stocks with these characteristics amount to around 180,000 tonnes.

The import release applies to beef produced before the atypical case of BSE was confirmed and shipped after March 23, the date when the Chinese government announced to be lifting the export embargo. The suspension lasted for a month. “The release of stocks is another victory for the government,” said Perosa to the Brazilian newspaper Valor.
