Santos Brasil has taken another significant step in its strategy to become carbon neutral with the attainment of the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) for its Imbituba (SC) and Vila do Conde (PA) units. The company’s operations in the state of São Paulo already held the certificate, which ensures that 100% of the energy used to operate the company in these locations will be made available to the national energy system, proportionally, as clean energy.

The company has acquired enough RECs for the consumption of megawatt-hours (MWh) related to the years 2022 to 2025 in Vila do Conde and Imbituba. The contract for the São Paulo units, which was valid for 2021-2022, will be renewed.

The International REC Standard is a global system that enables audited and secure certification, zeroing out CO2 emissions associated with energy consumption, as identified in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory under the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. It is the most reliable means of proving and tracking energy consumption from renewable sources, following strict international standards.
