The Brazilian authorities have announced that they will be strictly requiring all seafarers arriving in Brazil to be in possession of a seafarer ID card. Fines of $200 for each seafarer not holding the ID will be enforced.

A problem for international shipping with this new action from Brazil is that just 38 nations have ratified the International Labour Organisation’s convention for seafarer ID.

Executives from InterManager, the international body for third-party managers, have said they will look into the issue.
