SHI lays keel for ZIM’s 1st dual-fuel 15,000 TEU boxship

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has laid keel for Sammy Ofer 15,000 TEU dual-fuel containership at its Geoje yard.

The LNG-powered vessel is scheduled to join the Israeli shipping company ZIM Integrated Shipping Services fleet in 2023 under a long-term charter agreement. The vessel will serve the carrier’s Asia – US East Coast trade.

The ship was ordered as part of ten-vessel series back in 2021 by Seaspan Corporation, a Hong Kong-based owner and operator of container vessels.

The contract foresees a charter period of 12 years for all ten ships at the cost of US$1.8 billion to ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd, which reported strong Q2 results, including a net profit of $1.34 billion, as well as its best first half-year results with standout margins.

Past orders

Since 1974, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has been developing large vessels and other marine transportation methods. In October 2019, Samsung excelled in constructing 6 23,000 TEU container ships, ordered by Evergreen Marine Corporation, costing the Taiwanese company US$920 million.

The container carriers are 400 meters long, have a beam of 61.5 meters and a height of 33.2 meters, and are capable of transporting 23,764 TEUs. According to Samsung, Evergreen’s exceptional order bests the largest container ship in the world, MSC’s “GÜLSÜN,” which has 23,756 TEUs of capacity, which was also made by SHI, ordered by the Italian company currently based in Sweden in July 2019.
