Brazilian fertilizer imports grew 14.7% from January to July and reached 21.8 million tonnes, reported Consultoria Agro of Itaú BBA on Monday, Aug. 15. Despite the war in Eastern Europe, Russia was the primary source of purchases, with a 24% share of the total volume.

Last July, Brazilian fertilizer imports from Russia totaled 828,000 tonnes, a volume 10% higher than in July 2021. Purchases of fertilizers produced in Belarus, one of the largest global potash suppliers, fell by 90% compared to July last year to 26 thousand tonnes.

“With industries boosting fertilizer purchases since the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine,” the analysts write, “fertilizers have arrived in Brazil in volume even greater than in 2021, reducing concerns about product availability,” said the analysts from the bank.

With the recent downturn in fertilizer prices, Brazilian rural producers delayed purchases, contributing to an increase in the volume stockpiled at ports. Due to high stocks, supplies might be concentrated in a short period of time, limiting monthly import volume until the end of the year.

Earlier this month, Anda, an entity that brings together industries in the segment, reported that fertilizer deliveries between January and May increased by only 1.7% compared to the first five months of 2021, to 14.6 million tonnes.
