Wilson Sons starts operations with tugboat capable of reducing greenhouse emissions

Last week, Wilson Sons started operating the first tugboat of a series of six new tugs purchased by the company, bringing an innovative concept to Brazil. With the Damen RSD 2513 design, the vessel has a new hull structure that allows an estimated reduction of up to 14% in greenhouse gas emissions due to more efficient hydrodynamics.

The twin fin improves navigation and increases the drag capacity during maneuvers, which guarantees a reduction in fuel consumption and, consequently, emissions. In addition, the new vessels are the first in the country to follow the IMO TIER III standard, which promotes the reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 75%, contributing to the improvement of air quality. This standard is required in some regions of North America and Europe.

The new tugboat, WS Centaurus, has 91 tonnes of static traction (TBP), making it the most potent tug to operate in Brazil. In addition, it has Escort Tug class notation, is certified for firefighting (Fi-Fi 1), and has a length of 25 meters and a beam of 13 meters.

Upcoming deliveries

Built at the Wilson Sons shipyard, in Guarujá (SP), with a design by Damen Shipyards, WS Centaurus will be employed in São Luís (Maranhão). It will become part of the fleet of 11 tugs that the company maintains to support berthing and unberthing operations at the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal and the Port of Itaqui.

The decision to send the new vessel to São Luis was based on the large vessels that will dock there once the total energy efficiency potential locked up there is cleared. Another two new tugs will be delivered later this year, and the other will come into operation throughout 2023.
