After leading Hamburg Süd and Aliança Navegação in Brazil for many years, Julian Thomas has announced that he is stepping down as chairman of the Maersk Group on the East Coast of South America.

During his tenure with the company, Hamburg Süd took the lead in its line of work, and Navegação Aliança became the largest cabotage company in Brazil, a country where road transportation has always had the primacy. He also supported the creation of associations and groups that helped organize and regulate transatlantic shipping, cabotage, and multimodal transportation. He was a key figure in several conflicts that helped pave the way for cabotage to become a reality.

In a tribute given by Maersk, the corporation recalls the countless investments made in Brazil in projects initiated and vehemently advocated by Julian, which turned out to be quite profitable. The company also emphasized Thoma’s significance in Maersk’s overall involvement in the Hamburg Süd group.
