The 2022/23 orange crop in the main citrus-growing agricultural belt in Brazil from São Paulo to Minas Gerais was estimated at316.9 million 40.8 kg boxes, according to a study released by the research institute Fundecitrus on May 26th.

Production is expected to grow 20.5% compared to the previous cycle, Fundecitrus said in its first estimate for the region’s crop, which generates most exports of the fruit from Brazil, the world’s largest orange juice exporter.

The estimate was very close to the average for the last few years, said Fundecitrus general manager Juliano Ayres.

He also recalled that crops above 350 million boxes seem “something of the past” since the weather has persistently imposed challenges for the sector.

Ayres recalled that in 2021 there was a high rate of fruit drop due to drought, frost, and phytosanitary problems, which also resulted in “extremely small” fruits.

As for the new crop, the rains started in October and have been stable since. Also, the temperatures were milder and without long summer periods.

As a result, the crop is developing “close to normal, although rainfall is still below the historical average.”
