The current 147 million tons of cargo handled per year at the port complex located at the Santos Bay, in the state of São Paulo, will increase to 240 million by 2040, estimates the Santos Port Authority (SPA). The terminals at the Port of Santos are preparing to nearly double this capacity in less than 20 years by investing in strategic management, technology, and qualified labor.

According to Régis Prunzel, director of the Teg/Teag terminals, a twofold increase in handling rates is practically a reality. However, it will necessarily entail specific capabilities such as careful planning. “In that regard, we feel very secure. Given the increased rate humans consume, the next 20 years will be challenging. However, I see this as a great opportunity “, he believes.

Prunzel believes that it is critical to be more efficient and offer attractive investment rates to meet the goals set. “Shipping an ever-increasing volume of cargo requires more professionals and people who are better prepared for specific situations.” This has an impact on the entire local economy, including to municipalities which see their tax revenue increased,” argues Prunzel, who is also the president of the Union of Port Operators of the State of São Paulo (Sopesp).

Santos Brasil

The director of Port Operations at Santos Brasil, Roberto Teller, says that in the third quarter of 2021 alone, the movement of containers at the Santos Brasil terminal rose 30.7%. “The investments made by the company in its expansion and modernization project (it ended a cycle of R$ 450 million and is starting another cycle of R$ 500 million) generated greater handling capacity, leaving it ready to meet the growth expectation,” he says, adding that 90 professionals are still needed.

Wilson Sons

Adalberto Souza, executive director of Shipyards Wilson Sons, anticipates improvements in the naval industry. For more than 80 years, the company has operated two shipyards totaling 39,000 m² within Latin America’s largest port complex. It is also the only company with an on-site dry dock. “Our company anticipates increased exploration of natural gas as well as pre-salt operations, which will induce an increased demand of vessels.”

TGG

Adriano Alves Moraes, general manager of the Guarujá Bulk Terminal (TGG), recalls the critical role of logistics in times such as the covid-19 pandemic in maintaining the supply of products and food. “Over the last two years, we have prioritized the health and safety of our employees and partners at our facilities.”

Termag

Marcos Khalil, manager of the Guarujá Maritime Terminal (Termag), explains that in 2021, the company installed a new ship unloader to increase fertilizer handling capacity. With a 14-meter-deep pier, the space can accommodate ships weighing 75 thousand tons. “Our current capacity is to unload 15 thousand tons per day. Our storage area can accommodate 180 thousand tons”, he concludes.
