Despite production limitations caused by climatic factors and the increase in the cost of main inputs, Brazilian banana exports rose in 2021, consolidating the fourth consecutive annual increase.

According to the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex), the amount of fruit shipped to other countries neared 108,750 tonnes last year, up 29% from 2020. Revenue, in dollars, totaled US$ 37, 11 million (FOB), 42% higher comparatively.

The increase seen in the last year occurred in response to the high banana demand of other Mercosur countries; the increase in the price of the product due to lower entry of the fruit from competitors such as Paraguay, Bolivia, and Ecuador; he appreciated dollar against the Brazilian currency; and the fact that the domestic market is still heating.

Brazil’s production is expected to improve even more in 2022, albeit at a lower level, due to higher costs. This may continue to favor exports particularly to South American countries at the expense of domestic markets.
