Central-Atlantic railroad cargo handling in the Minas-Bahia corridor up 32%

From January to June 2021, VLI moved around 4 million tons along the Minas-Bahia corridor, part of the FCA, an increase of 32% over the volume handled in the same period last year. In the last two years, the number of customers served by VLI via the Minas-Bahia corridor also increased by 25%.
FCA’s Minas-Bahia corridor acts as an important logistical branch for the productive sectors due to a singular characteristic: its expertise in transporting general cargo. The branch sees regular handling of petroleum derivatives, lime, chemicals, iron ore, chrome ore, magnesite ore (heading towards the Port of Aratu and Minas Gerais), cement (shipped to the Port of Aratu), and containers. In Bahia alone, the municipalities of Alagoinhas, Castro Alves, Iaçu, Licínio de Almeida, Camaçari, Brumado, Campo Formoso, Candeias, Pojuca, and Itiúba are part of the regional railway map and act as product loading and unloading points.
In a statement, VLI informs that the “anticipated renewal of the Centro-Atlântica Railroad concession will also open doors for a new cycle of development. Initial evaluations of the process indicate an investment opportunity of R$ 13.8 billion in the current network towards improvements in the structure and assets – which also includes the FCA network in Bahia”.
In parallel, other investments have been made and destined for specific projects in the state. In partnership with Bamin, an additional R$ 35.8 million has been invested in the corridor since the first half of this year: in rolling material, in the reactivation of the railway terminal in Licínio de Almeida, and for the construction of a railway transshipment terminal/ road in Castro Alves.
