Self-employed truck drivers end strike at the Port of Santos (SP)

Self-employed truck drivers working at the Port of Santos ended their strike this Monday (November 8), after a week of stoppage. The information was confirmed to the newspaper “Folha de S.Paulo” by the Santos Port Authority (SPA) and also by SINTRAPORT (the union of Santos port workers), where the assembly was held on Monday afternoon.
In a statement, the port administrator announced that access to the Port of Santos flowed normally during the entire strike period, without traffic jams or bottlenecks of stopped trucks.
According to the Santos Port Authority, the police, the federal highway patrol, the federal police (PF), and the coast guard acted together under the coordination of CESPORTOS-SP (the state commission for public security in ports, terminals and waterways responsible for public port security), to ensure cargo flow. A team of 200 men was deployed to form a large security corridor from the access to the terminals to the ascent of Serra do Mar.
Autonomous truck drivers started a strike last Monday (November 1) to protest against Petrobras’ pricing policy and the rise in diesel prices which are reducing profits in the category. The movement did not catch on with many drivers, however.
The federal government also got a total of 29 injunctions in court to prevent roadblocks for strikers — at the risk of fines that could reach R$ 1 million — which ended up weakening the movement.
In Santos, truck drivers had tried since Monday to block port operations. Their goal was to force the government into negotiations by preventing the cargo arriving at the site from being transported.
