Major shipping companies want governments to invest more in the research and development of clean technologies to help the industry reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The International Chamber of Shipping organization said that with current policies, the sector is not on track to meet the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The group represents companies such as MSC and Hapag-Lloyd. They expressed support for a proposal by the International Maritime Organization to create a $5 billion fund to focus on the development of new technologies.

Industry representatives will meet with government ministers at COP26 in Glasgow next week. The maritime transport sector is responsible for 3% of global emissions.
